A Depth Psychology Perspective

This week, we turn to Einstein to examine the depths of what a grateful attitude can foster within the evolving soul.

The field of science is a relatively new phenomenon. While human beings have relied on experimental attitudes since or early beginnings, the ideas behind scientific methodology are only about 6 centuries old. This is a relative blip of time compared to the hundreds of millennia humans have taken to evolve to the point we now find ourselves facing. Yet we place a high degree of faith into the relatively new methodology, oftentimes at an afront to, versus an addition with which we can relatively view things.

Yet, with the spread of a global pandemic, and many placing their faith in science, I can see specific lessons bursting to be seen by an inquiring mind.

Two days ago, my wife called me ecstatic that the vaccines were released in England. She had seen a 90-year-old woman on the news receive her vaccine. Wow, the stories that lovely lady could tell. But this is yet one more beautiful story to tell in what must be a voluminous book of beauty, horror, love, and despair, we all face as human beings. She can now move on with living life to its fullest; the most beautiful part, what a story of survival to be able to tell. My wife was excited. Not by the news of the newest technological advancements that allow the field of medicine to fight a pandemic nearly one year after its beginning, but by the faith in the miracle we have witnessed when humanity puts aside its differences, and acts upon one common cause.

I cannot help but wonder what Einstein saw when he viewed the depth and beauty of the universe for the first time as a relative phenomenon. At the turn of the millennia, he was voted the most influential human being of the millennia. When he saw miracles, did he see the nature of God at work? As Descartes once said, “cogito ergo sum” (I think, therefore I am). While it may be a confabulation to assume an ego of deity proportions, I cannot think of anything more humble than to see the beauty of miracles found in a single drop of water, let alone that space above us of universal proportions.
