Inspiration for the Soul

I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.

The Philosopher’s Stone

Change: The most frightening word many will ever face. But why is this?

Change within the environment elicits fear. This one emotion, while valid, creates a whole host of secondary responses in the body that primes us for one thing, fight or flight. Salivation turns off, digestion turns off, and blood travels to the very places it will be needed to undertake the most breathtaking plight for survival. While these emotional and bodily functions are necessary if you attempt to escape a lion, do they need to fire off for a Monday Morning back to work session?

That is the human plight around anxiety. So what can we do?

I enjoy this saying from Jimmy Dean. As a psychotherapist that works with anxiety, there is no way to treat external circumstances. The only shot we have is to create an environment in which we adapt to them. New experiences will naturally generate a degree of fear. But small shifts in the way we adapt to life changes occur in unison with our growth process.

Give yourself small successes each day. Success builds upon itself and gives you the esteem needed to realize that “You Got This.” From this perspective, those tiny kittens will be just that, kittens. For it was only the mind in the first place that turned them into lions. I hope this short exploration into the realm of fear, anxiety and its purpose offers some insight for anyone who may need it today.

Namaste, my friends. May blessings find you on your journey to advance confidently in the direction of your dreams.
