Words of Wisdom

As far as we can discern, the sole purpose of human existence is to kindle a light of meaning in the darkness of mere being.

~ Carl Jung

A Philosophy of Purpose

What would the field of psychology be without that ever-nagging pull for people to kindle a light from the meaning of being?

In today’s citation, Carl Jung reminds us of this most basic human calling when he draws our attention to our need to find purpose. But how can we make light from darkness and bring a little happiness into our daily experiences? It is just that, the assumption of an attitude that welcomes the light through a new adventure, fosters experimentation, and can see past those biases that indeed are the elephant’s in the room of subjective consciousness.

However, such a philosophical attitude is a hard pill to swallow. Because the nature of subjectivity itself clouds the light made possible by an attitude of gratitude, or that willingness to interact with the environment as it is, not for what we expect it to be.

So how can we get to this place? Take one instant, any moment, and open up to the act of observing. What sounds, smells, and sights fill the air around you? Just perceive, and tell me if there is one thing you can focus on that brings light to the moment. If you can find it, the darkness will fade away, bringing light to the present moment, the only actual moment we readily have.

Blessings, my friends. May purpose find you along your journey to advance confidently in the direction of your dreams.
