The Soul of a Dream
Dr. Thomas Maples: Reflections on a Therapist’s Calling
All journeys begin with a dream. Hello, I am Dr. Thomas Maples, and my dream occurred in the summer of 2000 when I entered a deep and regenerative sleep after applying for law school. Like many, I yearned to belong to something greater and live a purposeful life. However, I did not know who I was or what I wanted to become.
Dreams are a starting point for engaging your future. They work through your imagination, opening you to inner worlds of creativity and new possibility. By dreaming, you deal with past emotional and psychological conflicts, develop an understanding of events that currently shape your life, and develop the ability to chart new and exciting possibilities for future development. Dreams are a starting point for you to realize the possibilities in life you seek.
Emotional, spiritual, and physical well-being is a product of soul work or our capacity to dream life forward and watch those dreams become a reality. Psychological symptoms, even mental illnesses, do not have to doom those who suffer its grasp. Instead, they can provide a snapshot of the problems that can impede us during the long and arduous journey called life. Symptoms, like dreams, allow us to develop a deeper understanding and engage in a path of self-discovery and, ultimately, awareness.
As a practicing psychotherapist with over 20 years of clinical experience, I have helped individuals with numerous life problems develop new perspectives on dealing with their emotional problems. Psychological symptoms are not a sign of weakness or even an illness; instead, they are roads into the soul of the problem that masks the inner strengths that may have lost sight of. Having treated everything from mood disorders to personality disorders, I have seen the soul behind the problem and have helped people develop new perspectives on their symptoms as being areas of strength rather than illness.
Are you feeling stressed out? Are things in your life feeling out of control? If you feel overwhelmed, stressed, or as if things are spiraling out of control, you are not alone. Let me help you regain control of your life and work on effective ways to deal with overwhelming thoughts, emotions, habitual behaviors, and typical daily stresses, so you can begin to dream life anew.

Dr. Thomas Maples: Dreams are a Calling Point
I cannot say how vetted I am as a therapist to see individuals re-engage their dreams. You see, there is no alternative. It is a microcosm without its macro alternative. This is for a very specific reason. A dream is non-negotiable; it can only be forfeited, not given up.
To forfeit is to create the ultimate decision with conscious choice. To give up promotes loss from a passive perspective, but who ultimately creates its ending? Yes, you do, but to what end?
In my work with people, I yearn to create a middle path. A path where one can navigate the everyday hardships of life to envision, chart a course, and advance confidently in the direction of our dreams. But that within itself takes time. It is up to us to give that time to create meaning for the dreams we create.
Thank you for joining me, my friends, as we venture out into new beginnings of finding beauty in the day within. Let us take this moment, just to be and find ourselves engaged in a newly creative and fruitful adventure. As always, let us find Blessings on our journey to advance confidently in the direction of our dreams.
