There are many misperceptions regarding the costs associated with professional mental health services. Most times, your insurance benefits will cover a significant portion, if not all of the costs associated with your mental health counseling or psychotherapeutic treatment.

Health insurance.

However, there is a trade off to billing medical insurance for your emotional health needs. In order to have insurances pay for your medical needs, including that of mental health counseling and/or psychotherapy, Mental Health Care Providers must submit written documentation to your insurance company that includes diagnoses for which you are being treated. While this allows for insurance payments to be submitted, other repercussions can arise when and if a mental health diagnosis is given. Once documentation is submitted to your insurance company for billing, this information becomes part of your permanent health record, cannot be changed, and can only be taken care of through secondary evaluations that will help show your diagnosis has changed over time. Some examples of issues that can arise if diagnosed with a mental health condition are possible denial to the United States Armed Forces, denial of security clearances, denial to law enforcement agencies, denial to purchase firearms, and / or need to rectify through further evaluations whether or not the diagnosed problem had been ameliorated. Therefore, it is imperative that you work closely with your mental health care provider, psychotherapist, counselor, or psychologist to understand your future employment goals, so that they can help you make an informed decision regarding your mental health care needs.

In many treatment facilities, county based organizations, and contracted government services, these possibilities are never discussed openly with clientele; however, we at the Stockton Therapy Network feel it is our duty to work with our client’s, helping you maneuver the maze associated with mental health counseling, while keeping focus on the future you want to create aside from the current emotional concerns that may stand in your way. Our therapists understand the continued limitations having a mental health diagnosis can have, and work diligently to help you understand the pros and the cons of using medical insurance as a payment option. We will work with you to develop an active treatment plan that delimits future repercussions meeting with a mental health counselor can have.
