To Be a Good Father: Lessons from the Myth of Daedalus and Icarus

How can we, as fathers, successfully channel our children’s natural energy toward productive ends? I believe this is the core vocation of any parent. Our goal is to move beyond “survival parenting” and instead create a “world myth” for the next generation—one better suited for the nuances of the modern world.

Fathering Icarus: More Than Just a Tragedy

In my series of podcasts on Youtube, listed below, we explore the Myth of Daedalus and Icarus. While often viewed simply as a tragedy of hubris, Icarus’s “flights of fancy” offer valuable insights into the nature of fatherhood.

The story sheds light on how men can teach their sons from a place of lived experience rather than abstract authority. By calling upon men to explore their souls’ inner depths, we set the evolutionary stage for lived action.

Moving Beyond “Do as I Say”

This approach stands in stark contrast to the “do as I say, not as I do” mentality typical of modern parenting. Through this exploration of Daedalus and Icarus, we uncover:

  • Authentic Mentorship: Why modeling behavior is more potent than giving commands.
  • Navigating the Mid-Point: Finding the balance between the “dampness of the sea” and the “heat of the sun.”
  • Generational Growth: How conscious fatherhood shapes how each new generation learns to fly.

Ultimately, embracing the complexities of fatherhood allows us to build a stronger, more resilient foundation for our children to soar.
