The Philosopher’s Corner

Oftentimes we turn to a Guru to help us answer those pesky questions that nag us from within. We seek the advice of a spiritual leader, an astute observant professional, or the loving gaze of that person we chose to share life with to guide us towards an intimate understanding of our inner dynamics. We project upon them the problem solving capacity that lies at the foundation of our very soul. While this practice is an adequate solution to short term problems, the essence of these questions ultimately must force the psyche to develop an intimate knowledge of the self moving forward.

The soul speaks in paradox. Many times, it is difficult for our waking consciousness to understand the true depths of the soul’s calling. The nature of consciousness itself is primarily an unconscious phenomenon, if modern neuroscience is right, and we ultimately only use about 10% of our brain’s capacity. So what lies within that unused 90%. The Shadow… The Light… Longing… Reunion… Despair… Hope… Faith. The answer, whatever we place there.

We were given all that we will become at the moment of conception. There is no more, no less. These were all formed at that moment the spermatozoa met with the egg, and the essence of your life was formed. Just as the image of the mighty oak exists a-priori in the genetic coding of the acorn, you to existed within the combination of genes passed onto you from your mother and father. Everything else from that moment on was created in the relationship you have with your environment.

There is a long running feud between the ideas of nature versus nurture. In essence, it is always both.

Nature… all of you existed at that moment of conception. You were perfectly formed, just the way you were. There is not going back from this state.

Nurture… even in the darkest of times, light is found. Even in the brightest of times, we still have a shadow cast behind us. In essence, nurturing itself is a give and take. What was ultimately given, was taken from another being. In partaking in this ritual of give and take, life is given and ultimately taken.

What can we do with this? Choose how you wish to interact with your environment. You can’t turn back time, you can only move forward. Even if every day was dark, today the sun will rise.

Will you choose to see it’s life giving force? It was made just for you… to brighten your day.
