The Philosopher’s Corner
Those who know or have worked with me in the past know that one of my go to philosophers was the 20th century Mythologist Joseph Campbell. What a wonderful man; he dreamed his life forward from a truly mythic perspective. He truly understood the power that lies behind The Secret truth that lies behind our individual dreams and collective myths.
But what can we do with this knowledge today?
Each one of us was born with what Robert Bly termed a Golden Ball. This radiant “sun” energy from within, permeates itself in a what Campbell believed were a 1,000 masks of heroism. You see, each and everyone of us has at our disposal a hero within. We need only to tap into the right story, the right myth, to bring this insurgent energy to the forefront, so that we may create from its inner wellspring. It is from this creative source that the essence of the Tao lies, that Secret that seems to drive life forward with little effort once conscious choice moves into lived action.
Campbell brings attention to the nature of our dreams. Personal dreams are but a private myth. Myths is but a collective storehouse of shared dreams. Answers lie within the symbolic meaning of its content. In fact, every great religious, philosophical, and even scientific discovery starts within this already established wellspring of collective knowledge we have at our disposal. By understanding the collective storehouse of what already is, we will direct what will become of the future in a way that builds upon the collective works of the Giant’s in humanity’s past. This is why we should learn from and not destroy the history, Good or Bad, that we have already endured.
