Nurturing Faith: The Power of a Mustard Seed

A Seedling of Faith

Faith’s Springing Light

And so the seed says,
Grow from me, and aspire
Faith's springing light.

A Mustard Seed of Faith

He proposed another parable to them. “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that a person took and sowed in a field.
It is the smallest of all the seeds, yet when full-grown it is the largest of plants. It becomes a large bush, and the ‘birds of the sky come and dwell in its branches.

Matthew 13:31-32

What would life be if we knew its exact outcome? I often ponder this question, as faith is the bridge across life’s greatest mysteries. As a philosopher, I’m drawn to the big questions that often have simple, yet profound, answers—answers that can take a lifetime to fully understand because they are rooted so deeply in faith.

Life exists at the crossroads of Body, Mind, and Spirit. It’s at this intersection that our faith meets the capacity of our body and mind to mature. There’s an element of soul here, grounding us in the life we are given. But there is also the presence of spirit, which emerges in our flighty dreams and the thrill of life’s challenges. It is spirit that tests our faith and, in doing so, allows us to grow.

What are we meant to become? Perhaps only God knows. The real question is, do we trust the journey? Many don’t, held back by a lack of faith. While philosophies of free will or scientific reductionism have their place, they only tell one side of the story. Rationality itself suggests some innate intelligence guides us, especially when we consider that life is a collective phenomenon.

It makes me wonder: what can we do with just one mustard seed of faith? With it, what can we become?

Embracing the Unknown

Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.

Martin Luther King

This quote from Dr. King has always moved me. Faith is precisely that: taking a step into the unknown. That first step always involves risk, but it’s a risk that faith encourages us to embrace. For many, the uncertainty is too daunting. Yet, we can only learn to navigate the risks of life by committing to take them on.

We start with small steps, and as we do, our faith grows. As our faith grows, so do we. Without risk, there is no reward. Without work, there is no growth. Dr. King understood that trusting our inner capacity was the only way to move forward.

To Identify and Navigate Risk

There is something to be said about one’s capacity to believe in an event yet to be seen. Faith is just that. It is taking a step into an unknown. However, taking that step constitutes an element of risk, a risk that faith encourages us to embrace. For many, that unknown will likely be too large a step to undertake. However, we can only learn to navigate risks present by committing to take them on. First small, and then let them grow. As they grow, so will you. Without risk, there is no reward. Without work, there is no growth. Dr. King knew this as a path towards the next step present, the ability to trust in one’s inner capacity.

Building Trust, Brick by Brick

To take that step, we need trust—both in ourselves and in others. I define trust as consistency in action over time. When actions are consistent, our minds start to acclimate to a new normal. We build a new neural pathway, defined not by instinct, but by reliability.

As we build this trust, our faith deepens. Our ability to approach and overcome the unknown expands, allowing for true personal development. This process shapes our self-concept and helps us reach for the ideal Self we seek to become.

Faith as a Collective Journey

With that said, as one develops trust, it deepens and broadens faith in the capacity to approach and overcome the unknown. It is from this perspective that personal development occurs. This also helps form the self-concept as it relates to that greater Self ideal one seeks to attain. While this journey may seem individual, remember, it is a shared experience with others. Without them, we cannot attain that element of self-mastery needed as a true expression of faith. For it is in others that belief is tested, allowing for the perpetual possibility for growth to help one transcend.

The Vine and The Branches: Faith as a Collective Journey

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine grower.
He takes away every branch in me that does not bear fruit, and every one that does he prunes* so that it bears more fruit.
John 15: 1-2

While the journey of faith feels deeply personal, it is ultimately a shared experience. As Jesus alluded, we are branches growing on a larger vine. Our connection to others is essential; without it, we cannot test our beliefs or achieve the self-mastery that is the ultimate expression of faith.

When we connect to a higher purpose, we create the capacity for exponential growth. This growth begins within us, but it has the power to affect the entire vine. It doesn’t happen overnight. It takes patience, nurturing, and the guiding light of the sun for a seed to realize its full potential.

I see a resurgence of faith all around me, peeking out from its grounding source. Perhaps it never went away. Perhaps it is simply the product of new seedlings yearning to find their fruition. Either way, may the glory of your seed’s springing light guide you as you advance confidently in the direction of your dreams.
