“We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.”― Maya Angelou
The Psychology Perspective
Today’s quote is a favorite of mine. It comes from the renowned poet, Maya Angelou. This quote has everything to do with the capacity we have to enact inner change in our lives for the better.
Beauty lies within. What a beautiful concept, that all to often, we forget. The Caterpillar goes through great hardship to realize its inner beauty. But its inner beauty is predetermined, before it ever takes part in its own life.
I have worked as a healer in mental health for nearly two decades. A common aspect of any mental health related problem is the incapacity one has to look upon themselves with loving kindness. This creates problems with faith in one’s capacity to overcome simple problems, to even more complex themes, where a person fails to realize their inner essence.
We have many lessons we can learn from the caterpillar. It moves forward, despite its limitations. It realizes its essence only through great hardship, and the ultimate process of cocooning itself, removing itself from the outside world, so that it can find its inner beauty. What a beautiful concept.
