Reflect upon your present blessings — of which every man has many — not on your past misfortunes, of which all men have some.Charles Dickens
To Reflect Upon Blessings
To be conscious. We awaken one day with a new set of skills, ready to take on the brevity of challenges the world may throw our way. Yet, somehow, we forget the sturdiness of the foundation from which we build this most basic human skillset. To be grateful, truly grateful for the gifts we’ve received, we must focus not on the misfortunes from which we have had the opportunity to learn.
The more I have practiced the field of psychoanalytic psychotherapy, the more I have seen and experienced the despairing constraints that consciousness leads the soul to undertake. The psyche requires a bargain to break through to the other side and find revelation with that higher source of being that never left our side in the first place. As the mystic poet, Hafiz reminds us, our relationship with God will one day become like this,
Next time you meet Him in the forest Or on a crowded city street There won't be anymore "Leaving." That is, God will climb into Your pocket. You will simply just take Yourself Along!
What would blessings to that nature mean to the awaiting human soul? What if that were our natural state in the first place?
Our willingness to grow is dependent upon the psychological bargains we make. We must let go of what is to move onto what will become. In this form of depth psychology, we begin to practice what Dr. Wayne Dyer called the psychology of arriving, not striving. For it is in the grind of trying that despair manifests. The new job, that new car, the original dream, all may seem out of reach until we learn to show genuine appreciation for what is in the moment. When we arrive at that place, a transition takes place. Much like what Joseph Campbell meant when he said,
Follow your bliss and the universe will open doors for you where there were only walls.Joseph Campbell
There is a genuine moral in today’s lesson from Charles Dickens. Count your blessings, not your misfortunes. The more you focus on that single point, the more you will be given for which to be genuinely grateful.
Namaste, my friends. May prayers and blessings find you on your journey to believe, achieve, and advance confidently in the direction of your dreams.
